Resurrected Life Here & Now ~ Suffering for Righteousness Sake: The Blessing

Our message today returns to 1 Peter and reminds us that the resurrection of Jesus gives us new birth to a living hope.  In this, we see in chapter 3:8-17 how this transforms our response to suffering and difficult relationships.  Peter calls Christians to live with unity, compassion, humility, and love, refusing to repay evil for evil.  Instead, we are to be a blessing even to those who mistreat us, trusting that God blesses those who faithfully pursue righteousness.

Drawing from Psalm 34 and the example of David, Peter emphasizes that God sees, hears, and cares for His people, even when they suffer unjustly.  We like Peter’s original readers are encouraged to fear God rather than people, trusting His promises, enabling us to endure hardship without bitterness or retaliation.

In this, our lives become beacons of hope for Christ.

STUDY GUIDE

1 – According to 1 Peter 3:8–9, what character qualities should mark the life of a Christian? Which of these is most challenging for you right now?

2 – Peter tells believers not to repay evil for evil but to bless others instead. Why is this response so difficult, and how does it reflect the character of Jesus?

3 – The sermon emphasized that “there is a blessing in being a blessing.” How have you experienced God’s faithfulness when choosing to do good in a difficult situation?

4 – How does Peter’s use of David’s life example in Psalm 34 encourage believers to trust God during seasons of hardship, injustice, or suffering?

5 – What is the difference between fearing people and fearing God? How does a proper fear of God help us face challenges with courage and faith?

6 – Has there been a time when your response to suffering, criticism, or difficulty created an opportunity to share your faith? What happened?

7 – What difficult person or situation may God be calling you to bless rather than resent or avoid? What practical step can you take this week?

8 – The sermon asks whether your life causes others to ask “Why?” because of your hope, joy, and faithfulness. What changes might help your life become a stronger witness to Christ?

Read Psalm 34 in its entirety. Reflect on one area of suffering, frustration, or conflict in your life. Pray for the grace to trust God, bless others, and live as a beacon of hope that points people to Jesus.
