Pentecost 2026 ~ Descriptive or Prescriptive?
Today’s message from God’s Word will challenge the common Western Christian tendency to view Acts 2 as the required pattern for every movement of the Holy Spirit. Drawing on passages from Acts, John, and the Old Testament, it will show that the dramatic events of Pentecost—tongues of fire, miraculous languages, and mass conversions, describe a unique moment in history, not a prescription for all believers for all time. The message will emphasize that God empowers His people differently depending on what is needed in each situation. Sometimes the Spirit moves through dramatic miracles, while other times He works quietly through peace, guidance, whispers, conviction, or simple obedience. Examples such as Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch, Paul’s Macedonian vision, Elijah hearing God in a whisper, and Jesus breathing the Spirit upon the disciples all demonstrate the diverse ways God works. We will be encouraged not to chase emotional or manufactured spiritual experiences, but instead to faithfully seek a genuine relationship with God and remain open to however the Holy Spirit chooses to move in us today.

STUDY GUIDE
1 – What is the significance of Pentecost in both Jewish and Christian history?
2 – Read Acts 2:1–12.
– What specific miracles took place on the Day of Pentecost?
– Why were these signs important for that moment in history?
3 – The message argues that Acts 2 is “descriptive” rather than always “prescriptive.”
– What is the difference between those two ideas?
– Why does this distinction matter for Christians today?
4 – Read John 20:19–23.
– How was the giving of the Holy Spirit in this passage different from Acts 2?
– What does this teach us about how God works?
5 – What dangers can come from trying to “manufacture” spiritual experiences instead of seeking a genuine relationship with God?
6 – Read Acts 8:26–40 (Philip and the Ethiopian Eunuch).
– How did the Holy Spirit guide Philip & what can we learn about obedience and being available to God?
7 – Read 1 Kings 19:11–13.
– Why is it important that Elijah heard God in a whisper instead of the wind, earthquake, or fire?
8 – The message says, “God gives what is needed, when it is needed, exactly how it is needed.”
– Can you think of some examples from Scripture or your own life where this is true?
9 – Why do you think some believers compare their spiritual experiences to others?
– How can this comparison damage faith or discourage believers?
10 – What would it look like practically for you to “quiet our soul” and remain open to the leading of the Holy Spirit this week?
