Spiritual Disciplines ~ Confession: Why We Should – Shame ⇒ Freedom
Today, we will continue to be invited to rediscover the forgotten spiritual discipline of confession, understanding why we should do it, as confession is a pathway to freedom, healing, and blessedness. Drawing from Psalm 32 and 1 John 1:8–9, it teaches that sin brings shame, silence brings decay, and confession brings forgiveness, freedom, and renewal. David’s testimony shows that unconfessed sin drains life and joy, while honest acknowledgment before God leads to forgiveness, protection, and a restored relationship. Confession, both vertical before God and horizontal within community, breaks the power of shame and opens the door to true spiritual transformation. The call is urgent: do not wait. Today is the day to confess, receive forgiveness, and walk in the freedom God gladly offers through Christ.

STUDY GUIDE
1 – Read Psalm 32:1–2: What does David mean by “blessed,” and how is this different from how our culture typically defines this term?
2 – According to Psalm 32:3–4, what were the physical, emotional, and spiritual effects of David’s unconfessed sin?
3 – Where have you seen similar effects in your own life or in others?
4 – The sermon describes the church as a fellowship of sinners before it is a fellowship of saints. How could this understanding change the way we approach community, vulnerability, and grace?
5 – Read Psalm 32:5: What shifts when David moves from silence to confession? Why do you think confession brings such immediate relief?
6 – Why do we often avoid confession, especially in Western Christian culture? What fears, pride, or misconceptions tend to hold us back?
7 – Read 1 John 1:8–9: What warning does John give about self-deception, and what promise does he give to those who confess?
8 – The sermon connects confession to freedom from shame.
How does hiding sin increase shame, while naming sin diminishes its power?
9 – Why do you think confession has been a common starting point for spiritual renewal and revival throughout history?
10 – What might it look like for you to practice confession more intentionally, before God and within trusted Christian community, this week?
