Advent 2025 ~ For Good – Hope

This sermon reflects on the first Sunday of Advent, the Sunday of Hope, through Luke 1:26–38, the announcement of Jesus’ conception. Advent is a season of anticipation, preparing our hearts to remember Christ’s first coming and to hope for His return. The message emphasizes the difference between worldly, wishful hope and the sure, confident hope found in Christ. God’s hope comes unexpectedly, as shown in His choice of Nazareth and Mary—ordinary, unlikely places and people. True hope is not based on circumstances or personal ability but on God’s promise fulfilled in Jesus. Mary’s response, “Let it be to me according to your word,” models the surrender and sacrifice required to receive this hope, even when it comes at great personal cost. Believers are invited to trust God’s timing, knowing His promises are never delayed. Advent calls us to say yes to Christ again, embracing the good and eternal hope only He provides.

STUDY GUIDE

1. What is the difference between worldly hope (wishful thinking) and Biblical hope (confident expectation)?  How does this distinction help you interpret the season of Advent and the Annunciation story regarding the hope Jesus gives?

2. In Luke 1, why is it significant that God chose Nazareth and Mary—an insignificant town and an ordinary girl—to bring the Messiah into the world?  What does this teach us about how God brings hope in unexpected places, circumstances, and people?

3. What are some hopes you currently carry that are circumstantial or wishful?  How do these differ from the eternal hope found in Christ?

4. Mary responds to God’s word by saying, “Let it be to me according to your word.” What would it look like for you to say the same in your life today?  Where is God asking for trust, surrender, or obedience?

5. Why does Biblical hope often require surrender and sacrifice?  How does Mary’s willingness in Luke 1 serve as a model of faith?

6. Reflect on verse 37: “For nothing will be impossible with God.”  What impossibility in your life do you need to place under this truth?

7. How does the idea of living “between the Advents” (between Christ’s first coming and His promised return) shape your understanding of hope?

8. The sermon states: “Good hope that is for good is never delayed.” How does this challenge the way you view unanswered prayers, waiting seasons, or delayed expectations?

9. In what ways have your personal circumstances ever blinded you to seeing God’s hope at work?  What practices help you recognize God’s presence in unexpected or difficult seasons?

10. Advent is an invitation to say yes to God again (or for the first time).  What is one specific way you can say yes to God’s hope this week?
