Faith Worth Contending For ~ How to Contend Part 5: Exposition of Showing Mercy

This sermon explores Jude 22–23 and teaches that contending for the faith means contending for people, not against them. Building on Jude’s instructions for strengthening our own faith, the message emphasizes that we must extend to others the same mercy we have received through Jesus Christ. The sermon identifies three groups who need our mercy. First, we must show compassion toward those who doubt by listening patiently, answering honestly, and encouraging their questions. Second, we must act with urgency to rescue those facing spiritual danger, offering correction, guidance, and hope with patience and perseverance. Third, we must exercise mercy with spiritual caution, helping others while remaining aware of our own weaknesses and avoiding temptation. Throughout, the message reminds us that truth and mercy must work together. Rather than condemning, shaming, or abandoning those who struggle, the church must pursue restoration and reconciliation. Ultimately, we are called to become merciful people who reflect Christ’s love while faithfully contending for the faith.

1. Read Jude 22–23. What three groups of people does Jude identify as needing mercy, and how are we instructed to respond to each group?

2. The sermon emphasizes that we must contend for people rather than against them. What is the difference? How can we stand firmly for biblical truth without treating people with contempt?

3. Read 2 Timothy 2:24–25. How does Paul instruct believers to correct others? Why are gentleness and patience important when helping someone understand the truth?

4. How should we respond when someone expresses doubts or asks difficult questions about the Bible, Jesus, or the Christian faith? What practical steps can we take to help them find answers?

5. Jude calls believers to rescue others from spiritual danger with urgency. How can we recognize when someone may be moving away from the truth, and what are some appropriate ways to help them?

6. Read Romans 7:24–25. How does recognizing our own struggles with sin help us show mercy to others who are struggling? Why is it important to remember our own need for God’s grace?

7. What does it mean to show mercy with spiritual caution? How can we help people who are struggling with sin while maintaining healthy boundaries and guarding against temptation ourselves?

8. The sermon connects a lack of mercy within the church to the problem of church hurt. How might our words, attitudes, or actions unintentionally push struggling people away from Christ? What could we do differently?

9. Think of someone in your life who is doubting, wavering in faith, or struggling spiritually. What is one practical way you could show that person mercy this week?
